The Magic Valley Astronomical Society will be co-hosting a Video Messier
Marathon with the Centennial Observatory, Herrett Center, College of
Southern Idaho Campus. This annual event puts a unique and challenging
aspect on a well known and respected favorite of deep sky observers since
the 1970's. The first marathoner to hunt down all 110 Messier objects in
a single night was perhaps Gerry Rattley of Dugas, Arizona on the night
of March 23/24, 1985. To attempt this feat of observational proficiency,
you must have excellent sky conditions, an ideal observing site, a trusty
telescope, and (most importantly) strong observing skills.
During the night of 23/24 March 2007 the public is invited to a free observing session in the Rick Allen Room where guests can observe up to 110 objects in the Messier Catalog via a video camera feed "live from the Centennial Observatory." The use of a Astrovid Stellacam II will allow multiple viewers easy and comfortable access "live" from one of 3 primary telescopes within the Observatory. The need for a trusty telescope is addressed as is the ideal observing site and strong observing skills. Now we hope for good weather. Look for previous contents of this page here. |
